Presented for sale in this lot is a old pair of Bona Allen marked saddle bags. They are a dark brown to black in color with original leather straps and metal buckles. While obviously used, the leather remains fairly supple. Bonaparte Allen learned the trade of tanning from his father. Bonaparte opened the Bona Allen Company at the age of 27 in 1873, and operated it as a tannery and leather goods shop. In 1933, a Bona Allen saddle won a blue ribbon at the Chicago World’s Fair. The Bona Allen Company received special acclaim in the 1950s for production of its classic saddles. During the peak of western movies, many of Hollywood's famous cowboy actors preferred a Bona Allen saddle—some even bringing their horses to Buford, Georgia, to get them custom fitted. The company remained in business until 1981. MAKER: Bona Allen, Buford GA. APPROX AGE: Antique. SIZE: 13 inches wide x 38 inches long. CONDITION: Pretty good for their age, normal wear expected.
